Este proyecto de cerámica contemporánea conceptual fue mi proyecto final integrado del Ciclo Superior de Cerámica Artística de la Escuela de Arte Dionisio Ortiz, Córdoba.
This project of conceptual contemporary ceramics was my final integrated project of my studies of Artistic Ceramics at Dionisio Ortiz School of Art, Cordova, Spain.
La idea sobre la que pretendo hacer girar esta obra es el cambio en la educación de los niños, especialmente durante su educación primaria, en los últimos 15-20 años. En mi trayectoria como maestro y profesor, he observado que el modelo de educación de los niños ha ido haciéndose cada vez más proteccionista y permisivo, siempre desde una observación personal y comparando mis recuerdos como niño estudiante y mi experiencia actual como adulto maestro. Considero que este proteccionismo, por un lado, y permisividad con las malas conductas, por otro, está dirigiendo a la sociedad a un futuro compuesto por individuos narcisistas, poco tolerantes y empáticos y, sobre todo, poco resolutivos, vulnerables de convertirse en seres depresivos por verse inútiles o ser incapaces de enfrentarse a problemas cotidianos de la edad adulta (estudios superiores, trabajo, relaciones sociales, familia, etc.).
The idea which I intend to think about with this work is the change in the education of children, especially during their primary education, in the last 15-20 years. In my career as a teacher, I have observed that the children’s education model has become increasingly protective and permissive, always from a personal observation and comparing my memories as a child student and my current experience as an adult teacher. I believe that this protectionism, on the one hand, and permissiveness with the misbehavior, on the other, is leading society to a future made up of narcissistic individuals, not very tolerant and empathetic and, above all, not very decisive, vulnerable to becoming depressive beings for seeing themselves useless or being unable to cope with everyday problems of adulthood (higher education, work, social relationships, family, etc.).
La obra conceptual que presenta este proyecto sirve de reflexión sobre lo mencionado anteriormente. Se trata de que el público capte un mensaje a través de la misma. Las piezas de este trabajo aportan la materialización de la reflexión y crítica que ya se ha hecho en numerosos artículos escritos por parte de psicólogos, pedagogos, educadores, autoridades educativas, etc. Las piezas están hechas para tocarlas e interactuar con ellas, y que la reflexión se acompañe de conclusiones sacadas del efecto de las distintas texturas y formas de las piezas, observadas en conjunto como un proceso.
The conceptual work presented by this project serves as a reflection on the aforementioned. It is about the public getting a message through it. The pieces of this work provide the materialization of the reflection and criticism that has already been made in numerous articles written by psychologists, pedagogues, educators, educational authorities, etc. The pieces are made to be touched and interacted with, so that the reflection is accompanied by conclusions drawn from the effect of the different textures and shapes of the pieces, observed together as a process.
Además, la obra pretende afianzar el papel de la cerámica como vía de creación del arte conceptual, y la peculiaridad que ofrece es la combinación de las piezas conceptuales cerámicas con materiales reales que aportan significado a la obra en su conjunto.
In addition, the work aims to strengthen the role of ceramics as a way to create conceptual art, and the peculiarity it offers is the combination of conceptual ceramic pieces with real materials that add meaning to the work as a whole.
Para transmitir la sensación de que las piezas cerámicas son representaciones de humanos, he creído oportuno un tamaño de las mismas que sea abarcable con las manos, fácil de palpar e incluso acariciar, y que puede recordar al tamaño de un niño o la cabeza de un adulto entre los brazos. Con el mismo propósito se ha elegido la forma y el volumen redondeado y orgánico. Por último, las texturas son la clave para adaptar el diseño a la finalidad conceptual de la obra. Se usa la textura lisa y pulida para expresar el mensaje de debilidad e inocencia en la primera pieza representando al bebé. A esta textura lisa le van surgiendo rugosidades y roturas que interrumpen el placer de tocarla en según qué zonas en la segunda pieza, el niño. La tercera pieza, el adolescente, se presenta llena de pinchos o púas, que pinchan realmente, para repeler al espectador. Por último, la pieza final aparece con una textura viscosa, con gotas y chorreones, que manda el mensaje de desecho o derretido: el adulto.
To convey the feeling that the ceramic pieces are representations of humans, their size should be accessible with the hands, easy to feel and even caress, reminiscent of the size of a child or the head of a adult in the arms. With the same purpose, a rounded and organic shape and volume have been chosen. Finally, textures are the key to adapt the design to the conceptual purpose of the work. The smooth and polished texture is used to express the message of weakness and innocence in the first piece representing the baby. Roughness and cracks appear in this smooth texture that interrupt the pleasure of stroking it in different areas in the second piece, the child. The third piece, the adolescent, is presented full of spikes, which really prick, to repel the viewer. Finally, the final piece appears with a viscous texture, with drops and drips, which sends the message of waste or melted: the adult.
El material elegido es el gres con chamota, en combinación de una pasta blanca y otra tostada que aportan también contraste de texturas rugosas y finas. Los esmaltes van cocidos a 1250ºC.
The chosen material is stoneware with chamotte, in a combination of a white and a brown clay that also provides a contrast of rough and fine textures. The glaze is fired at 1250ºC.
Soy un convencido de que la educación es la solución a todos los problemas de la especie humana, pero también de manera inversa es la causa de estos. En cualquier ámbito de la vida (social, legal, económico, profesional, formativo, etc.), una educación en unos valores adecuados evitaría situaciones no deseadas. Por ello, la primera preocupación que encuentro cuando entro en contacto con el mundo de la enseñanza es si estamos preparando a los futuros adultos de una manera correcta para evitar todas esas situaciones y si realmente estamos aprendiendo de nuestros errores de generación en generación o más bien al contrario.
I am convinced that education is the solution to all the problems of the human species, but also inversely is the cause of these. In any area of life (social, legal, economic, professional, educational, etc.), an education in appropriate values would avoid unwanted situations. Therefore, the first concern that I find when I come into contact with the teaching world is whether we are preparing future adults in a correct way to avoid all these situations and whether we are really learning from our mistakes from generation to generation or rather the opposite.
Leer sobre este asunto es relativamente fácil, pero reflejarlo en una obra cerámica se me presentaba un reto en un principio. Sin embargo, opté por analizar el asunto desde la propia experiencia personal, lo combiné con los distintos teóricos del asunto y llegué a la conclusión de expresar el mensaje deseado en cuatro etapas, que podría materializar en cuatro piezas. Las piezas reflejan completamente mi percepción de casos reales de individuos que conozco que han sido educados de esta forma o presentan estos rasgos, y lo que provocan en mi persona y la gente de mi alrededor.
Reading about this subject is relatively easy, but reflecting it in a ceramic work presented a challenge at first. However, I chose to analyze the matter from my own personal experience, I combined it with the different theorists on the subject and came to the conclusion of expressing the desired message in four stages, which I could materialize in four pieces. The pieces fully reflect my perception of real cases of individuals I know who have been educated in this way or present these characteristics, and what they do to me and the people around me.
