Torres Ferreras es el taller de mi padre, en La Rambla, Córdoba. Es el taller desde donde yo mismo trabajo, donde he aprendido cerámica desde que era pequeño. En 2019, decidimos dar un nuevo aire a la fachada para adaptarla al nuevo momento de este taller. Y yo fui el encargado de diseñar la nueva imagen.
Torres Ferreras is my father’s ceramics workshop, in La Rambla, Cordova. It is the workshop from where I work myself, where I have learned ceramics since I was a child. In 2019, we decided to give the façade a new look to adapt it to the new moment of this workshop. And I was in charge of designing the new image.
El principal motivo de la remodelación era abrir una puerta en la fachada que sirviera de entrada directa a la tienda-exposición del taller. Anteriormente, los clientes y visitantes tenían que acceder a esta tienda mediante la entrada grande del taller en sí, lo que disuadía a muchos de ellos, que a veces ni siquiera sabían si allí había tienda o venta al público. A continuación se muestra fotografía y plano de cómo era la fachada original.
The main reason for the remodeling was to open a door in the façade that would serve as a direct entrance to the shop-exhibition of the workshop. Previously, customers and visitors had to access this store through the large entrance of the workshop itself, which discouraged many of them, who sometimes did not even know if there was a store or sale to the public. Below is a photograph and plan of what the original facade was like.
Los condicionantes del nuevo diseño, aprovechando esta remodelación u obra menor, eran los siguientes/ The conditions of the new design, taking advantage of this remodeling or minor work, were the following :
- Un diseño que vaya bien con la nueva disposición de la fachada.
- Acorde a la imagen y colores corporativos.
- Que hable al visitante de lo que se hace ahí dentro: artesanía, cerámica, diseño, personalización.
- Con la renovación, la adaptación a la modernidad, el relevo generacional y el respeto a la tradición como concepto.
- Que sea llamativo, que invite a la foto incluso. El taller está en frente de un restaurante con terraza donde paran a desayunar y comer muchos locales y visitantes, la idea es que todos reparen en la fachada de enfrente o la comenten.
- A design that goes well with the new arrangement of the facade.
- Appropriate to the corporate image and colors.
- It should speak to the visitor about what is done in there: crafts, ceramics, design, customization.
- With renewal, adaptation to modernity, generational replacement and respect for tradition as a concept.
- Eye-catching, inviting to take a photo even. The workshop is in front of a restaurant with a terrace where many locals and visitors stop for breakfast and lunch, the idea is for everyone to notice the front facade or comment on it.
Con estas premisas, mi idea desde el principio fue romper con el concepto «zócalo» tradicional con el que ya contaba la nave y que fuera algo más cercano a un diseño por revestimiento, que pudiera hacerse a distintas alturas incluso jugando con las distintas medidas de los elementos de la fachada (puertas y ventanas). Por supuesto, a diferencia de la fachada anterior, el elemento decorativo principal debía ser la cerámica. Pensando en un uso tradicional pero con un diseño moderno de la misma, la opción más segura parecía ser un diseño modular, jugando además con distintos colores que formen parte de la imagen corporativa (grises) o incluso del catálogo de esmaltes del taller. Algo además que fuera un bonito fondo para una posible foto, inspirándome un poco en las típicas fotos retrato de las redes sociales con fondos de alicatados o de llamativos colores de fachadas.
With these premises, my idea from the beginning was to break with the traditional «plinth» concept that the facade already had and to create something closer to a modular design, which could be done at different heights even playing with the different measures of the elements of the facade (doors and windows). Of course, unlike the previous facade, the main decorative element had to be ceramics. Thinking of a traditional use but with a modern design of this material, the safest option seemed to be a modular design, also playing with different colors that are part of the corporate image (gray) or even the catalog of glazes of the workshop. Also, something that would be a beautiful background for a possible photo, somehow inspired by the typical portrait photos of social networks with tiled backgrounds or striking colors of facades.
A fin de desarrollar el concepto que quería contar, el de relevo generacional principalmente, y haciendo uso de la propia experiencia del taller en el que un hijo acaba trabajando o haciendo el oficio del padre, pensé en el refrán «de tal palo tal astilla», o incluso en el idiom equivalente del inglés «a chip off the old block», que sería algo así como un trozo o una lasca sacada del viejo bloque. Me imaginaba un ladrillo, o incluso una pieza de cerámica decoratíva, que se apostilla o se «despizca» como decimos en La Rambla. Estudié hacer diseños modulares de piezas grandes y otras pequeñas que encajan en esas como sacadas de esas mismas. Las formas triangulares me interesaban por formar parte de la imagen corporativa. También los rombos, o los cuadrados puestos en forma romboide.
In order to develop the concept that I wanted to tell, that of generational change mainly, and making use of my own experience of the workshop in which a son ends up working or doing the father’s job, I thought of the idiom «a chip off the old block». I imagined a brick, or even a decorative ceramic piece, from which a smaller piece is removed. I considered making modular designs of large pieces and other small pieces that fit into those as if taken from them. Triangular shapes interested me because they were part of the corporate image. Also the rhombuses, or the squares placed in a rhomboid shape.
En cuanto al color y la disposición de los módulos, elegí jugar con una escala de dos grises y un blanco, para contar a través de los mismos el paso de la tradición, lo antiguo, el padre (gris oscuro) a la contemporaneidad, lo nuevo, lo moderno, el hijo (blanco). Para insertar el toque llamativo, se introducen algunos módulos en un azul agua. Los módulos más oscuros, que dan aplomo, se colocan en la base de la fachada, y van degradándose hace los tonos más claros en las partes más altas. Además, el desarrollo de los módulos no es uniforme si no que acaba de forma irregular, dando sensación de ligereza y libertad a las piezas, y aportando un toque más moderno y minimalista en la fachada, que en su mayor parte conserva simplemente la pared blanca.
Regarding the color and arrangement of the modules, I chose to play with a scale of two grays and one white, to tell through them the passage from tradition, the old, the father (dark gray) to the contemporary, the new, the modern, the son (white). To insert the striking touch, some modules are introduced in a water blue. The darker modules are placed at the base of the façade, and they gradually fade into lighter tones in the higher parts. In addition, the development of the modules is not uniform but ends in an irregular shape, giving a feeling of lightness and freedom to the pieces, and providing a more modern and minimalist touch to the facade, which for the most part simply preserves the white wall .
El diseño se completa en la parte superior de la fachada con el nombre comercial del taller TORRES FERRERAS, también hecho en cerámica.
The design is completed in the upper part of the facade with the commercial name of TORRES FERRERAS, also made in ceramic.
